In May 2016 the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the Southern Hemisphere surpassed 400 parts per million. In the wake of this news, James Farley created a series of lumen prints on 4x5 photographic film to both mark the period and record moments of personal reflection. Each sheet of film traces a day of mindfulness, when Farley’s own actions that create carbon emissions were noted and measured against choices that could help reduce his individual impact.

These slow documents don’t reveal any great truth about the threat of anthropogenic climate change. Instead, they are symbolic of an idea that is beyond representation. They record a physical exchange between the complex systems of life on earth, and remind us that although we are each a small part, our choices are far from insignificant.
